Night is when leaks are most likely. A person lies still for hours, may not wake to change, and lying down moves liquid toward the back and sides. Overnight products are built for this with a larger or more absorbent core, a higher back, and a closer fit at the legs. There are four main options: overnight briefs with tabs, overnight pull-up underwear, overnight pads and liners worn in underwear, and bed underpads that protect the mattress. Many people use two of them together. Everything below is in our overnight incontinence products collection, and the details come from each manufacturer's listing.

Overnight briefs with tabs

Briefs open fully and fasten with tabs, so a caregiver can change them while the person lies on their side. The Prevail Air Overnight Brief uses breathable fabric and is listed for heavy absorbency: Size 1 fits a 26" to 48" waist (case of 80) and Size 2 fits 45" to 62" (case of 72). The Wings Quilted Overnight Brief has a super-absorbent core, a dryness strip, a quilted cloth-like backsheet and breathable side panels. For larger sizes, see our briefs collection and our brief sizing guide.

Overnight pull-up underwear

Pull-ups go on like regular underwear, which suits people who get up during the night on their own. All the overnight pull-ups below have tear-away side seams for easy removal.

Overnight pads and liners

For bladder leaks that are lighter than a full brief needs, a long overnight pad worn in snug underwear may be enough. The TENA ProSkin Overnight Pad and the women's TENA Intimates Overnight Pad are both 16 inches long with a Dry-Fast Core. The Prevail Daily Pads Overnight are also 16 inches and individually wrapped. For more length, the TENA ProSkin Night Super Liner is 27 inches. Browse women's and men's incontinence products for gender-specific shapes.

Bed underpads for backup

An underpad on the bed catches anything that gets past the main product and saves changing the sheets. The Attends Night Preserver is a disposable 30" x 36" heavy-absorbency underpad with a cellulose and polymer core. To compare disposable and washable options, read reusable vs. disposable underpads.

Checklist for a drier night

  1. Check the fit first. Most night leaks come from a product that is too big or too small, so measure the waist and hips and use the larger number.
  2. Choose a product marked overnight or heavy absorbency rather than a daytime product.
  3. Snug the leg openings and pull the leg gathers outward so they sit in the groin crease.
  4. For tabs, fasten the lower tabs angled up and the upper tabs angled down.
  5. Add a bed underpad as backup.
  6. Protect the skin. Change as soon as practical in the morning, and talk to a nurse about a barrier cream if the skin gets red.
  7. Tell the doctor if night leaks are new or getting worse.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between overnight and regular incontinence products?

Overnight products are designed for longer wear and heavier volumes, usually with a larger or more absorbent core. Check the absorbency level on each listing.

Are tabs or pull-ups better at night?

Tabs suit people who stay in bed or are changed by a caregiver. Pull-ups suit people who get up and use the toilet on their own.

Can I add a pad inside an overnight brief?

Some people add a booster pad made for that purpose. A regular bladder control pad with a waterproof backing can block liquid from reaching the brief's core, so check the product label first.
