Transfer aids help a caregiver move a person from one seated surface to another, such as from a bed to a wheelchair, a wheelchair to a car seat, or a chair to a commode. This collection brings together transfer boards, pivot discs, gait belts and transfer belts.

Types of transfer aids

Transfer boards: solid hardwood, notched and flexible plastic boards in lengths from about 23 to 30 inches. Notches and cutouts give a place to hold the board or clear an armrest.
Pivot discs: SafetySure discs in 15 and 18 inch sizes turn under the feet during a standing pivot transfer.
Gait belts: 60 inch belts worn around the waist give the caregiver a secure place to hold. Some have hand grips or a quick safety release buckle.
Transfer belts: SafetySure transfer belts come in small, medium and large waist ranges.

Choosing the right aid

Check the length of a transfer board against the gap it needs to bridge, and check the weight rating listed on each product page. For belts, measure the waist and choose the size range that fits. A physical or occupational therapist can show the safest transfer method for the person you care for. Many items are FSA/HSA eligible.
