To measure for compression stockings, use a soft tape measure in the morning and record your ankle, calf and leg length. For thigh-highs and pantyhose, also record your thigh and hip. Then match those numbers to the size chart for the exact brand and style you are buying, because Jobst, Blue Jay and other brands each use their own charts. If a clinician has given you a specific compression level or style, measure for that product. Our compression stockings mmHg guide explains the levels.
What you need
- A soft, flexible tape measure (not a metal one)
- A chair and a flat floor
- Paper to write down each number, in inches or centimeters to match the chart
- A helper, if bending is hard
When to measure
Measure in the morning, soon after you get up, before you have been on your feet for long. Measure bare legs, not over socks or pants. If you are replacing stockings you already wear, measure again rather than reordering the old size. Measurements can change over time.
Where to measure
| Measurement | Where | Needed for |
|---|---|---|
| Ankle | The narrowest point, just above the ankle bone | All styles |
| Calf | The widest part of the calf | All styles |
| Knee-high length | Sitting with your foot flat on the floor and knee at a right angle, from the floor to the bend behind the knee | Knee-highs |
| Thigh | The widest part of the upper thigh, usually just below the buttock | Thigh-highs, pantyhose |
| Thigh-high length | Standing, from the floor to the top of the thigh | Thigh-highs |
| Hip | Around the widest part of the hips | Pantyhose and waist-high |
Reading the size chart
- Start with the ankle. Many charts set the size by ankle first, then check the calf.
- Check the calf range. If your calf is above the range for your ankle size, look for a "full calf" size, which Jobst offers in some lines.
- Pick a length. Many styles come in regular (short) and long lengths, based on your leg-length measurement.
- Between sizes? Read the notes on the product page or the brand chart. Don't guess from your shoe or clothing size.
Other things to check before ordering
- Open or closed toe. This changes the fit at the foot, not the size.
- Left and right. If your legs measure differently, check whether the style is sold singly or as a pair.
- Putting them on. Firmer levels can be harder to pull on. Rubber donning gloves, such as Jobst donning gloves, help with grip.
