Standard walkers, rollators and canes are usually rated to about 300 lb. Bariatric models use heavier tubing, wider frames and stronger joints so they can carry more weight and give a larger user more room. When you compare them, look at four numbers: the weight capacity, the width between the handles, the seat size and height on a rollator, and the height range of the handles or cane. The models below are all in our bariatric equipment collection, and the specs come from the manufacturers' listings.

Bariatric rollators
A rollator has four wheels, hand brakes and a seat, so the user can stop and sit whenever they need to. For larger users the seat matters as much as the weight rating. The Dynarex Bari+Max HD Rollator has the widest seat in our range at 31 inches, with 35 inches between the handles and a 700 lb rating. Its steel frame weighs 55.1 lb, so it is very stable but heavy to lift into a car. The Dynarex Bari+Max Bariatric Rollator is rated to 500 lb on an aluminum frame that weighs 20.5 lb, which makes it the easier choice to fold and carry. The Drive Medical Oversize Bariatric Rollator uses a reinforced steel frame rated to 500 lb, an 18-inch-wide padded seat, a removable backrest, an under-seat basket and loop-lock brakes. Browse all bariatric rollators, and see our general guide on how to choose a rollator.
Bariatric folding walkers
A folding walker with front wheels is a fixed frame that the user leans on and lifts or glides forward. Many people find it steadier than a rollator, and it has no seat. The Bariatric Folding Walker with Wheels is rated to 600 lb and has 20 inches of room inside the hand grips and a 27-inch overall width. Each side folds on its own push button, and rear glide caps are included. Not sure which type suits you? Read rollator vs. walker or shop all walkers.
Bariatric canes
Bariatric canes use thicker 1-inch tubing. Our aluminum models are rated to 600 lb and adjust from 30 to 40 inches. The silver Bariatric Offset Cane is steel, rated to 500 lb, and adjusts from 30 to 39 inches. For taller users, the Bariatric Heavy Duty Offset Cane adjusts from 37 to 46 inches, is rated to 600 lb and comes with a wrist strap. Fit checklist before you order
- Weight capacity: choose a rating above the user's current weight, not right at it.
- Hip width: measure across the widest part of the hips and compare it with the width between the handles, so the user can stand inside the frame comfortably.
- Seat height: on a rollator, the user's feet should rest flat on the floor when seated.
- Handle height: with arms relaxed at the sides, the handles should line up roughly with the wrist crease.
- Doorways and storage: compare the overall width with your narrowest doorway, and check the folded size against your car trunk.
- Who lifts it: a steel frame is sturdier but heavier. If a caregiver has to lift it often, compare frame weights.
Frequently asked questions
What is the highest weight capacity rollator you carry?
The Dynarex Bari+Max HD Rollator is rated to 700 lb and has a 31-inch-wide seat.
Is aluminum or steel better for a bariatric rollator?
Steel frames are heavier and are used on the highest weight ratings. Aluminum is lighter to fold and lift. At 500 lb we carry a steel model (Drive Medical) and an aluminum model (Dynarex), so you can choose by how often you will lift it.
Can I sit on a walker?
No. Standard and folding walkers are not built to be sat on. If the user needs to rest while walking, choose a rollator with a seat and lock the brakes before sitting.
